The Value of Reading: A Lifetime List

Child Reading

"Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body" -Sir Richard Steele.

Sadly, more and more people today are giving up the printed word in favor of being entertained and informed by the talking head and crystal clear imagery of the ever-larger TV set that sits as a throne in the center of their living space.

Reading encourages thinking, reflecting and the cultivation of truth, but image-driven cultures tend toward subjectivism, superstition, hedonism and propaganda.

Over the years I’ve been fortunate to read many insightful and life-changing books. Each of these books added something permanent to me–an insight, a vision, an attitude, a way of looking at life.

I try to spend at least 15 to 20 minutes every day going over one or more of these books.

It may not seem like much time, but it adds up.

Just 20 minutes a day is over two hours a week which is over 100 hours a year. That’s a brain changing (and life changing) chunk of time. I’ve been doing it for over twenty years myself.

For each category I’ve read literally hundreds of books that haven’t made the cut, so these are truly exceptional books – many of them are classics.  Read and enjoy!
